Many borrowers who request a gold loan top-up in a mobile app come across a screen asking for a code sent to their phone. A top-up is an extra loan amount added to an existing gold loan using the same pledged ornaments.

OTP verification for a gold loan top-up is the step in which the borrower confirms the reviewed request by way of a one-time password (OTP). The One-Time Password is an example of a temporary password used once. This blog post details the position of the OTP in the entire recharge process, its verification, and also the handling of late OTPs.

Where the OTP Sits in the Top-Up Journey

The public guide for the IIFL Loans App describes a top-up request that starts with an eligible gold loan. The bank account is confirmed, an amount within the eligible limit is entered and the details are reviewed before the borrower taps Confirm.

It is only after this that the app asks for the code. In other words, OTP verification for a gold loan top-up comes at the very end, once the amount, account and terms are on the screen. For those wondering how to verify a gold loan top-up with OTP, the code works much like a signature on that review screen.

This OTP is different from the OTP used during registration, which validates the phone number before creating an MPIN (a 4 digit sign-in pin). This top-up OTP will only validate that particular request that has been considered a few moments ago.

What the OTP Confirms and What It Does Not

A valid code indicates that the request is indeed submitted through the registered mobile number. However, a valid code does not in any way indicate that the top up request is already accepted or the money transferred to the bank account.

When the Code Does Not Arrive

Those who need to troubleshoot top-up OTP verification tend to face a delayed message, an expired code or a wrong entry. As per the public guide, OTP delivery depends on the telecom operator, and a Resend OTP option is available. Retries may vary by account and app version. Asking for several codes in a row may only blur which one is current.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan Top-Up

The borrower's KYC (Know Your Customer) records from the first loan are generally already with the lender, though older records may be refreshed. The items commonly involved are:

  • Photo identity proof, such as Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence
  • PAN card, generally needed for KYC, tax and regulatory purposes
  • Current address proof, if the address has changed since the first loan
  • Details of the bank account that will receive the top-up

Where a borrower does not have PAN, Form 97, which replaced Form 60 from April 2026, may be considered depending on lender policy. Declarations or records on ownership of the ornaments may be sought where the lender's procedure calls for it. Any further papers depend on the loan amount and the lender's assessment.

Eligibility and Valuation

Age, residency and ownership conditions are drawn from the regulations and from each lender's policy. A lender may consider credit history in line with its internal rules.

The RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025 were implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026. Under them, a top-up needs a formal request and a standard account, and it generally stays within the LTV limit. LTV (loan-to-value) is the share of the gold's value that can be lent, capped at 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh. The cap is 80% above ₹2.5 lakh up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh.

Gold is valued at the lesser of the previous day's closing price and the 30-day average on IBJA or a SEBI-regulated exchange, adjusted for purity. Only net gold is counted. Above ₹2.5 lakh of total gold and silver loans, a detailed credit assessment including repayment capacity is required. At or below this level it is not required, though lenders may run their own checks.

Application Process

A top-up on an existing gold loan generally follows the steps given below.

  1. The borrower opens a regulated lender's app and selects the loan shown as eligible for a top-up.
  2. The bank account is confirmed, and an amount within the displayed eligible amount is entered.
  3. The review screen, which may include the Key Facts Statement (a short summary of cost and terms), is read through.
  4. The OTP sent to the registered mobile number is entered to authorise the request.
  5. The financier completes its assessment, and disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete.

Once the full loan is repaid, the directions provide for return of the gold within seven working days. Any delay caused by the lender attracts ₹5,000 a day.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

IIFL Finance may offer a gold loan top-up, depending on whether the product is available. Each request depends on the borrower's eligibility, the valuation of the gold and the rules in force. A top-up can be suitable for existing borrowers who need a further amount and like placing the request digitally. Interest and fees may differ between lenders and products for reasons of funding and risk.

As the regulations and lender policy permit, top-up funds can be used for genuine personal or business needs, for example:

  • Repairs to a delivery van used in a family business
  • Fees for a professional certification course
  • Restocking a hardware shop before the festival season
  • Hospital bills for a relative after a planned surgery

Even while pledged, the jewellery continues to belong to the borrower. It is returned after the loan has been repaid as agreed.

Conclusion

OTP verification for a gold loan top-up is the last step of the request, and it comes after the amount, account and terms have been reviewed. The code shows that the request came from the registered number, but it is no proof of approval or payment. A delayed code is dealt with through the on-screen guidance and the Resend OTP option, instead of repeated fresh requests. In gold loan, money can be borrowed against eligible gold, with the borrower keeping ownership of the gold subject to repayment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

What role does OTP play in IIFL's published top-up flow?

Ans.

In this flow, OTP verification for a gold loan top-up acts as the final confirmation of a reviewed request. It authorises that request only and comes after the loan choice, bank check, amount entry and review screen.

Q2.

What is looked at if the top-up OTP is delayed?

Ans.

The mobile network and the registered number on the phone come first. The Resend OTP option can then be used as shown on the screen.

Q3.

Is the top-up OTP the same step as app registration?

Ans.

No. Registration OTP ensures the number linked with the loan account before the MPIN generation process, and top-up OTP approves the requested borrowing transaction.

Q4.

Does a top-up acknowledgement prove that money reached the bank?

Ans.

Certainly not alone. The confirmation indicates that the request was received, whereas the bank statement indicates whether or not the funds have been received.

Q5.

Can I share the OTP with a person offering to complete the top-up?

Ans.

No. OTP, MPIN and Passwords are known only to the borrower and never will be asked by any official communication channel of the lending institute.

Q6.

Does entering an OTP prove that top-up approval and bank credit are complete?

Ans.

No. The OTP confirms only the verification step at that moment, and assessment, approval and transfer follow after it.
