As the maturity date of a gold loan comes closer, many borrowers wish to renew the loan and need to know the payable amount first. More than one figure may be shown in the app, and which of these matters for renewal is not clear at first glance.

This blog explains how to check gold loan dues before renewal, what each figure means and why each one is tied to a date. The way a payment is matched with the loan record, and the RBI rules on renewal, are also covered.

Why Dues Are Paid Before Renewal

A good number of gold loans run on bullet repayment, wherein interest and principal become due together at the end of the term. Under the RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, a bullet loan availed for consumption can run for a maximum of 12 months.

The directions were implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026. Renewal is permitted on a formal request, for a standard account within the LTV limit. In the case of a bullet loan, accrued interest is paid before renewal. Clearing the dues is thus one of the conditions of renewal and not the approval as such.

The Figures on a Gold Loan Account

Those trying to learn how to view the amount payable before renewing a gold loan will generally find an account summary as well as a statement in the app.

Principal outstanding refers to the portion of the borrowed sum that is yet to be repaid. Accrued interest is the interest that has built up since the last payment. A total payable figure may also take in charges disclosed in the agreement. The outstanding balance for gold loan renewal is whatever the lender's renewal conditions call for, be it the accrued interest or some other figure.

Interest builds up on a daily basis, so the figure seen today may not tally with the one on the payment date. A dated and itemised amount from the lender explains the gap between two such figures.

Matching the Payment With the Loan Record

Borrowers who check gold loan dues before renewal and then pay can later tally the payment with the loan statement. As per the lender's published walkthrough, the payment is made by choosing the loan, selecting Make Payment, entering the amount and tapping Pay Now.

The amount, date and transaction reference are available in the bank or UPI record, and these are matched with the credit in the statement. If the two do not agree, the same details are raised with the lender against the loan for a trace. Paying a second time while the first is uncertain may only need to be sorted out later.

Eligibility and Valuation

Conditions on age, residency and ownership are laid down by the regulations and by the lender's own policy. Credit history may be considered by a lender as per its internal norms.

LTV (loan-to-value) is the portion of the gold's value that may be lent. The directions cap it at 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% above ₹2.5 lakh up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh. At the time of renewal, the gold may be valued afresh. The value is the lesser of the previous day's closing price and the 30-day average on IBJA or a SEBI-regulated exchange, adjusted for purity. Only net gold is counted.

In case total gold and silver loans exceed ₹2.5 lakh, a detailed credit assessment including repayment capacity is required. At or below that figure it is not required, although lenders may carry out checks of their own.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan

The records generally involved, both for the original loan and at the time of renewal, are set out below.

Document

Purpose

Photo identity proof, such as Aadhaar, voter ID or passport

Part of the KYC (Know Your Customer) file

PAN card

Generally needed for KYC, tax and regulatory purposes

Address proof

Needed where the current address differs from the identity document

Latest loan statement and receipt for the dues paid

Where a borrower has no PAN, Form 97, which took over from Form 60 in April 2026, may be accepted as per lender policy. Records or a declaration on ownership of the ornaments may be sought where the lender's procedure needs it. Further papers, if any, depend on the loan amount and the lender's assessment.

Steps to Apply for Renewal

Dues and renewal generally fit together in the following order.

  1. A dated payable figure is obtained from the regulated lender through its app or the loan statement.
  2. The accrued interest, or any other amount fixed by the renewal conditions, is paid through an available channel.
  3. The payment is tallied with the loan statement, and a formal request for renewal is placed.
  4. The financier reviews the LTV position and credit details, and shares revised terms with the Key Facts Statement.
  5. The terms are accepted, and where any fresh amount is sanctioned, disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete.

When the loan is finally repaid, the directions provide for the gold to be returned within seven working days. A delay on the part of the lender attracts ₹5,000 per day.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

IIFL Finance may provide a gold loan, subject to the product being available. Every loan is dependent on the borrower's eligibility, the valuation of gold and the rules applicable at that time. It can be suitable for borrowers who want their dues and payment records in one place ahead of renewal. Rates and fees may differ from one lender and product to another, owing to funding and risk factors.

As permitted by the regulations and lender policy, the money from a gold loan can be utilised for genuine personal or business needs, for example:

  • Fabric stock for a small boutique
  • School uniforms, books and term fees
  • Servicing and insurance renewal for an auto-rickshaw
  • Hospital expenses during a family emergency

Ownership of the jewellery is not passed on to the lender at any point. It remains with the borrower and is returned after the loan has been repaid as agreed.

Conclusion

As per the directions, a bullet gold loan is generally renewed on a formal request once accrued interest is paid. To check gold loan dues before renewal, the label and date of each figure are read, and a dated amount is taken from the lender. After payment, the bank record is tallied with the statement. Renewal stands complete only when revised terms are issued. In gold loan, money can be raised against eligible gold, with the gold continuing to belong to the borrower subject to repayment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

How do I identify which dues apply before renewal?

Ans.

The label and date of each figure are read against the renewal conditions, which is how borrowers check gold loan dues before renewal. An itemised amount from the lender shows which among principal, accrued interest and total outstanding applies.

Q2.

Is principal outstanding the amount payable for renewal?

Ans.

Not necessarily. Principal outstanding is only the unpaid part of the borrowed sum, while a bullet loan is generally renewed after accrued interest is paid.

Q3.

Does clearing the displayed dues mean renewal is approved?

Ans.

No. Payment and approval are two separate steps, and the loan stands renewed only once revised written terms are issued and accepted.

Q4.

Which records are retained when payment records disagree?

Ans.

The amount, date, transaction reference, the bank or payment app record and the loan statement are kept together. These help the lender reconcile the transaction.

Q5.

Can the payable figure change before I act on it?

Ans.

Yes. Interest keeps adding up and other entries may come in, so the figure worked out for the actual payment date is the one that counts.

Q6.

Does checking dues itself affect or establish eligibility?

Ans.

No. Viewing the balance does not change the account in any way, and eligibility for renewal rests on the lender's assessment.
