Ten grams of jewellery may look like a straightforward basis for estimating a gold loan, yet its gross weight alone does not reveal the amount available. A gold loan 10 gram new LTV estimate starts with the ornament’s eligible net gold content, verified purity and the prescribed benchmark price. For an eligible consumption loan of up to ₹2.5 lakh, the RBI framework applicable from 1 April 2026 permits a maximum LTV of 85%. A lender may apply a lower percentage under its product policy, so the regulatory ceiling is not an assured offer. This article explains the LTV slabs, the 10 gram gold loan amount 2026 formula, purity adjustments, valuation deductions, minimum-weight considerations and the effect of changing gold prices.

What Is LTV and How Does It Relate to a 10-Gram Gold Loan?

Loan-to-value, or LTV, expresses the loan exposure as a percentage of the assessed value of eligible collateral.

LTV (%) = Outstanding loan amount ÷ Assessed value of eligible gold × 100

For a regular repayment loan, the outstanding amount is used in the ratio. For a bullet-repayment loan, the RBI Directions require the total amount repayable at maturity to be considered. This distinction matters because principal and accrued interest may both affect the LTV calculation in a bullet structure.

The RBI ratio is an upper boundary. The amount offered may be lower after appraisal and under the lender’s product, documentation and assessment criteria.

Note: Maximum LTV does not assure a particular sanction. Eligibility, loan value, pricing and repayment terms remain subject to verified collateral, lender policy and applicable regulation.

LTV Limits Applicable from 1 April 2026

The RBI Directions prescribe the following maximum LTV ratios for consumption loans against eligible gold or silver collateral:

Total consumption-loan amount per borrower

Maximum regulatory LTV

Up to ₹2.5 lakh

85%

Above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh

80%

Above ₹5 lakh

75%

These tiers replace the use of 75% as a universal shorthand for every consumption gold loan. They do not require a lender to offer the maximum percentage. For example, IIFL Finance currently publishes lending of up to 75% of assessed gold value, which is below the regulatory ceiling for the two smaller slabs.

For a loan on 10 gram gold India estimate, the applicable tier depends on the resulting consumption-loan amount, not on the 10 g weight by itself. The 85% ceiling applies only when the total eligible consumption-loan amount per borrower remains within the first slab.

How Lenders Value 10 Grams of Gold

Under the RBI methodology, eligible gold is valued at the reference price corresponding to its verified purity. The lender uses the lower of:

  • the average closing price for that purity over the preceding 30 days; or
  • the closing price for that purity on the preceding day.

The price has to be published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association or a commodity exchange regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India. If a price for the exact purity is unavailable, the nearest published purity may be used with a proportionate adjustment.

Only intrinsic gold value enters the calculation. Making charges, retail margin and sentimental value do not form part of the collateral value. Stones, lac, beads, strings, fastenings and other non-gold components are also excluded.

Note: A retail gold quotation is not necessarily the valuation benchmark used for a loan. The applicable rate depends on the prescribed methodology, valuation date and verified purity.

Purity-Wise Reference for 10 Grams

The following table shows the fine-gold equivalent before any deduction for non-gold components. It does not state a rupee loan amount because the benchmark price changes over time.

Purity

Fineness factor

Fine-gold equivalent in 10 g

General product position

18K

75.00%

7.50 g

May be considered where accepted by the lender

20K

Approximately 83.33%

Approximately 8.33 g

May be considered where accepted by the lender

22K / 916

91.60%

9.16 g

May be considered where accepted by the lender

These figures assume that all 10 grams are gold alloy. An ornament containing stones or other material will have a lower eligible net gold weight. Higher purity generally produces a higher assessed metal value for the same eligible weight, but it does not create a higher regulatory LTV percentage.

IIFL Finance currently describes its standard gold-loan collateral as eligible gold jewellery generally between 18K and 22K. A 24K coin, bar or other form does not automatically fall within that published product position, even though the RBI framework defines eligible collateral more broadly.

Formula for Estimating the Loan Value of 10 Grams

The gold loan calculation formula depends on how the benchmark is expressed.

Where the lender uses a rate already adjusted for the ornament’s verified purity:

Net eligible gold weight × purity-specific reference price × lender’s applicable LTV = indicative loan ceiling

Where a pure-gold reference price is used only for an explanatory calculation:

Net eligible gold weight × purity factor × pure-gold reference price × lender’s applicable LTV = indicative loan ceiling

A purity factor is not applied again when the quoted gold loan per gram rate already reflects the verified caratage. Otherwise, purity would be deducted twice.

The result remains indicative because the lender’s LTV may be below the RBI maximum and the final appraisal may identify deductions from gross ornament weight.

Gross Weight and Net Eligible Gold Weight

A 10 g ornament does not necessarily provide 10 g of eligible gold alloy. The appraisal records gross weight, net gold content, purity and deductions. Non-gold components may include stones, lac, enamel, beads, strings and fastenings.

For example, if a 10 g ornament includes one gram of non-gold material, the purity calculation begins from the remaining eligible net weight rather than the full 10 g. The value is then determined using the prescribed reference price for the assessed purity.

Under the RBI Directions, the borrower is present during assaying at sanction, and the lender provides a certificate or e-certificate containing the recorded purity, gross weight, net gold weight, deductions, image and assessed collateral value.

Is 10 Grams Enough for a Gold Loan?

The RBI Directions do not prescribe a universal minimum jewellery weight for every lender. A lender may instead set a minimum loan size or other product-level conditions. Ten grams may support an application where the jewellery is eligible and its assessed value meets those conditions, but acceptance is not automatic.

For IIFL Finance, the published product information focuses on eligible jewellery between 18K and 22K. The particular ornament remains subject to ownership checks, KYC, physical appraisal and the lender’s current terms.

Credit history may be treated differently in secured lending than in an unsecured personal loan, but the presence of collateral does not remove every assessment or verification requirement.

What Happens If Gold Prices Fall After Disbursal?

When the assessed collateral value falls while the outstanding exposure remains unchanged, the effective LTV rises. The RBI Directions require the prescribed LTV ratio to be maintained throughout the loan tenor.

A change in market value does not automatically mean that the interest rate changes. Monitoring, repayment requirements, additional eligible collateral and other corrective measures depend on the loan agreement, applicable regulation and lender policy.

Partial repayment may lower the outstanding exposure where permitted. Any addition of collateral remains subject to appraisal, ownership verification, the lender’s acceptance criteria and relevant regulatory limits.

Note: The action following an LTV movement is product-specific. The loan agreement and Key Facts Statement provide the relevant terms, charges and default consequences.

Conclusion

The gold loan value 10 grams is a valuation outcome rather than a fixed market quote. Net eligible weight, verified purity and the prescribed reference price establish the collateral value; the lender’s applicable LTV then determines the amount that may be considered. From 1 April 2026, an eligible consumption loan within the first slab has an 85% regulatory ceiling, although IIFL Finance and other lenders may follow a lower product limit. A realistic 10 gram gold loan amount 2026 estimate therefore separates the RBI maximum from the lender’s current LTV and removes stones or other non-gold material before calculation. Comparing the appraisal certificate, applicable benchmark, Key Facts Statement and repayment structure gives a clearer picture than multiplying gross weight by a retail gold price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

What are the new LTV rules for gold loans?

Ans.

From 1 April 2026, eligible consumption loans against gold or silver collateral have maximum LTV ratios of 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh. A lender may apply a lower product LTV, and the actual sanction remains subject to valuation and assessment.

Q2.

What LTV is offered on a gold loan?

Ans.

The regulatory maximum for an eligible consumption loan is determined by its loan-amount slab. The lender’s offered LTV may be lower. IIFL Finance currently publishes lending of up to 75% of the assessed gold value, subject to its appraisal and product terms.

Q3.

How much loan may 10 grams of gold support?

Ans.

There is no fixed rupee amount. The estimate uses net eligible gold weight, verified purity, the prescribed reference price and the lender’s applicable LTV. Stones and other non-gold components reduce eligible weight, while making charges and purchase price do not add to the collateral value.

Q4.

Does purity affect the amount available on 10 grams?

Ans.

Yes. Higher purity generally provides more fine-gold content for the same eligible weight and may therefore produce a higher assessed value. Purity affects the value to which LTV is applied; it does not create a separate regulatory LTV percentage.

Q5.

Is a gold loan available on 10 grams without a credit score?

Ans.

Credit information may play a different role in a secured gold loan than in unsecured lending, but no universal rule requires every lender to disregard it. KYC, rightful ownership, collateral eligibility, valuation and lender-specific checks continue to apply.

Q6.

What is the minimum gold weight required for a gold loan?

Ans.

The RBI Directions do not set one minimum jewellery weight for all lenders. A lender may use a minimum loan amount, accepted-purity range or other product conditions. Whether 10 g is sufficient therefore depends on eligible net weight, assessed value and the lender’s current policy.
