A breakdown on the road can leave a vehicle owner with a garage bill that was not part of the month's budget. For many families, a gold loan for vehicle repair expenses is one way of paying such a bill without having to sell the jewellery kept at home.

A gold loan is a secured loan in which gold ornaments are pledged with a regulated lender until the loan is repaid. This blog explains how such a loan works for a repair bill and how the gold is valued. The repayment options are also covered.

A Gold Loan as a Way to Pay for Repairs

In a gold loan, the pledged jewellery serves as security, and the lender gives an amount that is linked to its value. The ornaments are kept in the lender's safe custody and are given back once the loan is repaid in full.

For an unplanned repair, a gold loan for unexpected vehicle repair expenses may suit owners who have jewellery lying idle.

The Repair Estimate and the Loan Amount

For a gold loan for vehicle repair expenses, the garage estimate gives a figure to work from. Some borrowers pledge only as much gold as is needed for the quoted repair cost, and not the full amount the jewellery could support.

The amount that is finally sanctioned is decided by the value of the gold and the LTV limit.

Gold Purity and Valuation

Purity and Carat Eligibility

Purity is measured in carats, and the lender's valuer tests it at the branch in front of the borrower. Jewellery of very low purity may not be accepted, depending on the lender's policy.

Net Weight and the Appraised Value

Stones, studs and other non-gold parts are weighed and taken off, so that only the net gold weight is valued. Under the RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, the price used is the one for the purity actually found. Where no price is published for that purity, the nearest one is used and the weight is adjusted in proportion.

Gold Loan and Other Ways to Pay a Repair Bill

A garage instalment plan or a card-based payment plan tends to work without collateral, whereas a gold loan is secured by jewellery. The main point about using a gold loan to pay for vehicle repairs is that the pledged gold is at stake if repayments stop.

Repayment Around the Owner's Income

Gold loans commonly come with regular instalments or interest-only payments, where the principal is paid at the end. A bullet option, in which everything is paid at maturity, may also be offered. Under the directions, bullet loans taken for consumption are capped at 12 months.

For a vehicle that earns an income, such as a taxi, repayment may be timed with the return of regular trips. A missed payment can lead to penal charges and, finally, to the sale of the pledged gold after notice.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan

The KYC (Know Your Customer) file for a repair loan is the same as for any other gold loan. The table below shows the papers commonly asked for.

Document

Purpose

Photo identity proof, such as Aadhaar, passport or voter ID

Confirms the identity of the applicant

Address proof, where the identity document shows an older address

Confirms the present address

PAN details

Generally requested during KYC, with other documents considered in some cases

Recent photograph and the jewellery

Completes the file and allows the purity check

Where internal procedures require it, a declaration or records on ownership of the ornaments may be sought. Additional papers will depend on the size of the loan and the lender's assessment.

Eligibility and Valuation

Age, residency and ownership conditions are drawn from the regulations and the lender's own policy. The financier may also go through the applicant's credit history as per its internal norms.

The directions were implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026. A detailed credit assessment, including repayment capacity, is required once a borrower's total gold and silver loans exceed ₹2.5 lakh. At or below that amount it is not required, though lenders may apply their own checks.

The LTV (loan-to-value) ratio is the share of the gold's value that can be lent. The ceiling is 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% above ₹2.5 lakh up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh. Gold is valued at the lower of the previous day's close and the 30-day average from IBJA or a SEBI-regulated exchange, adjusted for purity.

Application Process

  1. The applicant approaches a regulated lender with the KYC documents, at a branch or online where available.
  2. The jewellery is weighed and tested in the applicant's presence, and a valuation certificate is provided.
  3. The loan amount is set with the repair estimate in view, and within the LTV limit.
  4. A sanction letter with the Key Facts Statement gives the amount, tenure and repayment terms.
  5. The agreement is signed, and disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete.

After full repayment, the gold has to be returned within seven working days as per the directions. If the lender is the cause of a longer delay, it pays ₹5,000 for every day.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

Gold loans may be available from IIFL Finance where the product is offered, and jewellery of 18 to 22 carat is generally accepted. Any loan depends on the applicant's eligibility, the valuation of the gold and the regulations in force. It may suit vehicle owners who need money for a repair but would like to keep their jewellery. Rates and fees may be different from one lender or product to another, owing to funding and risk costs.

Gold loan funds may be put to genuine personal or business use, within what the regulations and lender policy allow, for example:

  • Engine or gearbox repair on a commercial vehicle
  • Tyre and battery replacement for a delivery van
  • Accident repairs not fully covered by insurance
  • Servicing of an auto-rickshaw used for daily income

The jewellery remains the borrower's property even while it is pledged. It is returned after the loan has been repaid as agreed.

Conclusion

A gold loan for vehicle repair expenses allows a vehicle owner to pay a garage bill against pledged jewellery rather than selling it. The repair estimate gives a starting figure, while the gold's value and the LTV limit decide what is lent. Repayment can be timed around the owner's income through instalments, interest-only payments or a bullet plan. A gold loan may offer access to funds against eligible collateral while the gold continues to be owned by the borrower. The valuation, disclosures and handling of the ornaments follow the policies and regulations that are in place.
