An old refrigerator gives up in the middle of summer, or a washing machine stops working with no money set aside for a new one. Store finance is one option in such cases. A gold loan for home appliance purchase is another that some households look at.

In a gold loan, gold jewellery is pledged with a regulated lender, and the loan is repaid with interest. This blog explains how such a loan can pay for an appliance and how it differs from store financing. It also shows how repayment can be matched to the life of the item. The documents, valuation, application steps and common questions are covered too.

Using a Gold Loan for a Home Appliance

Buying a household appliance is a personal purpose. The RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026, treat such a loan as a consumption loan. The purpose is generally noted while applying.

A gold loan for home appliance purchase rests mainly on the value of the pledged gold. The directions do not set a minimum credit score, though credit history might be reviewed under the lender's policy.

For total gold and silver loans of ₹2.5 lakh or less, a detailed credit assessment is not required by the directions. The lender may still apply its own checks. Above ₹2.5 lakh, an assessment that includes repayment capacity is required.

How a Gold Loan Differs From Store Financing

Store financing is in most cases arranged at the counter through a partner lender. It may apply only to certain brands, models or stores, and offers can come with their own conditions.

A gold loan for consumer durables works in a different way. The money is credited to the borrower's bank account, and the purchase can be made from a seller of the borrower's choice. The security, however, is the family's jewellery. For this reason, a gold loan for home appliance purchase is looked at differently from a counter offer.

Matching Repayment to the Life of an Appliance

An appliance loses value from the day it is bought. A long repayment period for an item with a short life can mean interest is still being paid well after the purchase. Lenders commonly offer a few repayment patterns.

Monthly Interest, Principal Later

Only the interest is paid each month, and the principal is cleared at the end. The monthly outgo stays low, but the full principal is still due on the closing date.

Regular Instalments

Each instalment covers part of the principal along with the interest. This suits a salaried household that wants the loan to reduce month by month. A gold loan to buy household appliances repaid this way tends to close in line with a planned budget.

Bullet Repayment

In bullet repayment, principal and interest are paid together at the end of the term. For consumption loans, the directions cap this term at 12 months. The LTV for such loans is worked out on the total amount payable at maturity.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan

The documents commonly requested are:

  • An Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID or driving licence for identity
  • Address proof, where the ID shows an older address
  • PAN details, generally requested during KYC (identity and address verification), though other documents may be considered in some cases
  • A recent photograph and bank account details
  • The ornaments to be pledged

Any additional papers depend on the loan amount and the lender's policy.

Eligibility and Valuation

Rules on age, residency and ownership of the jewellery are set by regulation and the lender's policy. The lender might ask for a declaration of ownership where its process requires one.

The gold's value is taken at the rate for its actual purity. That rate is the lower of the previous day's closing price and the 30-day average. It is published by IBJA (India Bullion and Jewellers Association) or a SEBI-regulated exchange. Only net gold is counted, so stones are left out.

The LTV limit (loan-to-value, the portion of the gold's value that can be lent) is 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh. It is 80% above ₹2.5 lakh up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh.

Application Process

  1. The applicant brings the jewellery and KYC documents to a regulated lender.
  2. The lender's valuer weighs the items and tests their purity with the applicant present.
  3. A certificate is prepared showing purity, gross and net weight, deductions and value.
  4. A written offer may be shared, covering the amount, applicable interest rate, charges and repayment pattern.
  5. On accepting and signing, disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete.

Pledged gold is to be returned on the day of full repayment, and within seven working days at most. A delay caused by the lender beyond this attracts compensation of ₹5,000 per day under the directions.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

A household needing a new appliance may be able to take a gold loan from IIFL Finance. This is based on product availability, eligibility, the gold's assessment and regulatory requirements. It might be relevant for households that wish to buy from a seller of their choice. Interest rates and fees vary between lenders and products.

As far as applicable regulations and lender policy allow, the amount can be put towards genuine needs such as:

  • Replacing a refrigerator or washing machine
  • An air conditioner or cooler before summer
  • A water purifier or kitchen appliance
  • Installation and delivery charges

Since the jewellery is pledged and not sold, the borrower generally remains its owner, provided the loan is repaid as agreed.

Conclusion

A broken appliance is a common reason for an unplanned household spend. A gold loan for home appliance purchase lets the buyer choose the store, with the jewellery as security. The RBI directions treat this as a consumption loan, with bullet repayment capped at 12 months. The repayment period has a bearing on the total interest paid. The amount depends on purity, net weight and the LTV slab.

A gold loan can be a way of arranging funds against eligible gold while ownership stays with the borrower, subject to repayment. Valuation and custody of the pledged gold are handled as per the rules and the lender's policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

Can I use a gold loan for home appliances?

Ans.

Yes, in most cases. Buying an appliance is a common personal purpose. The application still goes through KYC, valuation and the lender's checks before any sanction.

Q2.

How does a gold loan for home appliances compare with a consumer durable loan?

Ans.

The security and the choice of seller differ. A gold loan is backed by jewellery and can be spent at any store, while store loans are generally tied to partner sellers. The total cost of each can differ too.

Q3.

What documents are needed when borrowing against gold for home appliances?

Ans.

Standard KYC documents are generally needed, along with bank details. The ornaments are valued in person, and a bill for the appliance is not part of the KYC file.

Q4.

How is the gold loan amount decided for home appliances?

Ans.

The gold decides it, not the appliance price. Purity, net weight and the benchmark price set the value, and the LTV slab sets the limit within that value.

Q5.

How is gold loan repayment planned for home appliances?

Ans.

The sanction letter sets the dates. Monthly interest, instalments or bullet repayment each lead to a different monthly outgo.

Q6.

What happens if I am unable to repay a gold loan used for home appliances?

Ans.

Overdue amounts may attract disclosed penal charges, and the account may show as overdue with credit bureaus. Unpaid dues may lead to an auction of the gold after notice.
