A workshop estimate after a breakdown can arrive well before the next salary does. Clutch work, brake parts or an overdue service can add up within a week. Some car owners then look at a gold loan for car repair and maintenance, using jewellery the family already owns.

In a gold loan, gold ornaments are pledged with a regulated lender as security, and the loan is repaid with interest. This blog explains how such a loan may cover workshop bills and why the car itself is not part of the security. It also covers the agreement terms, documents, valuation and the application steps.

How a Gold Loan May Cover Workshop Bills

A gold loan may be used for a permitted purpose stated in the application, as per the lender's terms. The funds may go towards labour, spare parts, tyres or a scheduled service. Some households treat a gold loan for car repair and maintenance as a way to cover the gap until the next income comes in.

A written estimate from the workshop gives a fair idea of the sum needed. A gold loan for car servicing costs tends to be a small amount, so the borrower may ask for less than the full eligible figure. A smaller loan generally means less interest to repay.

Gold as Security Instead of the Vehicle

Many vehicle loans use hypothecation, which means the car is charged to the lender and the registration certificate records that charge. A gold loan works differently, since the jewellery is the security.

With a gold loan for car maintenance expenses, the car's papers carry no charge for this loan. The pledged gold stays in the lender's safe custody until the loan is closed. KYC (customer identity and address checks) checks and the lender's assessment still apply.

What the Agreement Says About the Pledged Gold

The agreement and the Key Facts Statement (a short summary of the loan's main terms) set out the rate, charges and repayment dates. Penal charges may apply to overdue amounts, as disclosed. If dues stay unpaid, the lender may auction the gold after notice to the borrower.

Under the RBI directions, the auction is advertised in two newspapers, one regional and one national. The reserve price is at least 90% of the gold's current value. These rules apply to any gold loan for car repair and maintenance from the day of pledge until the day of release.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan

The documents commonly requested are shown below.

Document

What it generally shows

Aadhaar card, passport or voter ID

Identity of the applicant

Address proof

Current address, where the ID does not show it

PAN details

Tax identity, requested as part of KYC

Recent photograph

Record for the loan file

Gold ornaments or eligible coins

The security for the loan

The PAN is generally collected during KYC verification. Where it is not available, alternative documents may be considered as per lender policy. Any other papers depend on the lender's policy, the loan amount and the assessment involved.

Eligibility and Valuation

Age, residency and ownership conditions are subject to applicable regulations and lender policy. The lender may ask for a declaration or records on ownership of the ornaments, as per its internal procedure.

Where total gold and silver loans of a borrower go above ₹2.5 lakh, the directions require a detailed credit assessment that covers repayment capacity. At or below ₹2.5 lakh it is not required, though lenders may apply their own checks. Credit history can be reviewed in line with lender policy.

Valuation follows the RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026. The benchmark is the lower of the previous day's closing price and the 30-day average, from IBJA or a SEBI-regulated exchange. The rate is applied for the purity found, and only net gold weight counts.

The LTV limit (loan-to-value, proportion of gold's value that can be lent) is 85 percent till ₹2.5 lakh, while it is 80 percent from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, and 75 percent beyond ₹5 lakh.

Application Process

  1. The owner of the jewellery approaches a regulated lender with the gold and KYC papers.
  2. The ornaments are evaluated by the lender’s valuation expert with the presence of the applicant.
  3. The Valuation Certificate has details on purity, gross weight, net weight, deductions, and value.
  4. The applicant can be sent the sanction letter specifying the amount, the interest rate, and the repayment process.
  5. When the agreement is signed, funds will be released following completion of the verification process and other formalities.

When the gold is paid off completely, the rules stipulate that the gold should be released within seven working days. However, when the delay occurs due to any negligence from the lender’s side, then the penalty imposed is ₹5,000 per extra day.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

IIFL Finance may offer a gold loan, depending on product availability, the borrower's eligibility, collateral assessment and prevailing regulatory requirements. Automobile owners having gold ornaments and having to pay for car repairs amid the pay cycle may feel related. The rates and charges vary from product to product and from financial institution to financial institution.

Within applicable regulations and lender policy, the funds can be put to genuine personal or business use, for instance:

  • Workshop labour and spare parts after a breakdown
  • Scheduled servicing, oil and filter changes
  • Tyre or battery replacement
  • The part of a repair bill not covered by motor insurance

The jewellery is pledged and not sold, so it generally remains the borrower's property, subject to repayment and the loan terms.

Conclusion

A gold loan may pay for workshop labour, parts or servicing, as per the stated purpose and the lender's terms. The security is the pledged jewellery, so the car's registration carries no charge for this loan. The amount rests on net gold value and the LTV slab under the RBI directions. These points explain how a gold loan for car repair and maintenance works in practice.

Gold loan provides money against eligible gold even when the ownership of gold remains intact for the borrower. Valuation, disclosures, and custody of pledged gold are all done according to the relevant regulations and policies of the lender.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

Can I use a gold loan for car repair and maintenance?

Ans.

Yes, in most cases. Car repair and servicing are common purposes, subject to the lender's terms. The application still goes through KYC, valuation and approval, so pledging gold does not by itself mean sanction.

Q2.

How does a gold loan for car repair and maintenance compare with a loan secured on the vehicle?

Ans.

The main difference is the security. A gold loan puts the jewellery at risk if dues stay unpaid, while a vehicle-secured loan places a charge on the car. Each has its own rate, charges, tenure and assessment.

Q3.

What documents are needed when borrowing against gold for car repair and maintenance?

Ans.

The standard KYC set applies. This generally covers identity proof, address proof, PAN details, a photograph and bank account details, along with the jewellery for valuation.

Q4.

How is the gold loan amount decided for car repair and maintenance?

Ans.

It rests on the gold's value and the LTV limit. Net gold weight, purity and the benchmark price set the value, and the repair estimate does not fix the sanction amount.

Q5.

How is repayment planned for a gold loan taken for car repair and maintenance?

Ans.

It follows the schedule in the sanction letter. Some schemes ask for monthly interest, some for instalments and some for repayment at the end of the term. Under the RBI directions, bullet repayment loans for consumption are capped at 12 months.

Q6.

What happens if I am unable to repay a gold loan used for car repair and maintenance?

Ans.

Overdue dues and disclosed penal charges may build up, and the account may be reported to credit bureaus. If dues remain unpaid, the lender may auction the gold after notice. According to the rules, any leftover from the auction is paid back to the borrower within seven working days.
