A salaried employee who needs funds before the next pay day may wonder whether a gold loan calls for the same paperwork as other loans. Questions about gold loan documents for salaried applicants tend to centre on salary slips, Form 16 and bank statements.

A gold loan is a secured loan in which gold jewellery is pledged with a regulated lender. This blog explains when income papers matter and which identity and address documents are common. The difference between salaried and self-employed files is also covered.

Gold as Security and the Role of Income Papers

In a gold loan, the pledged jewellery is the main security, and this shapes the gold loan documents for salaried applicants. For this reason, income papers often play a smaller part than in loans given without collateral.

The RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025 were implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026. Where a borrower's total gold and silver loans stay at or below ₹2.5 lakh, the directions do not require a detailed credit assessment. A lender may still apply its own checks at this level.

Above ₹2.5 lakh, a detailed credit assessment that includes repayment capacity is required. Salary slips, Form 16 or bank statements may then be asked for as part of it.

Identity and Address Proof

The documents required for a salaried person's gold loan start with KYC (Know Your Customer) papers. These confirm the applicant's identity and address under RBI's KYC rules.

Identity Proof

Officially valid documents commonly used for identity include the passport, driving licence, voter ID and proof of Aadhaar possession. PAN is collected separately for tax and KYC purposes. It is not, however, counted among the officially valid documents.

Address Proof

Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID can also serve as address proof where the address on it is current. Where it is not, a recent utility bill may be accepted for a limited period, as per lender policy.

Salaried and Self-Employed Applicants

The core gold loan eligibility documents for salaried employees are the same KYC set that is used for every applicant. The difference lies in the income records asked for when an assessment applies.

A salaried applicant may be asked for salary slips, Form 16 or a salary account statement. In the case of a self-employed applicant, business records such as bank statements, GST filings or tax returns may be requested instead.

The financier may look at the applicant's credit history, in line with its internal norms. With the applicant's consent, the credit report may also be checked during the review.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan

A typical file for a salaried applicant includes:

  1. Photo identity proof, such as passport, driving licence, voter ID or Aadhaar
  2. Address proof, where the identity document does not show the current address
  3. PAN details, generally requested at the time of KYC verification, with other documents considered in some cases
  4. Salary slips, Form 16 or bank statements, where the loan amount or lender policy calls for them
  5. A recent photograph and the gold jewellery to be pledged

Where its internal procedures call for it, a loan provider may ask for a declaration or other records about ownership of the ornaments. Further papers, if needed, depend on the lender's policy, the size of the loan and the assessment involved.

Eligibility and Valuation

Requirements in terms of age, residency and ownership of the gold are set by the regulations and by each lender's own policy. The documents are looked at alongside a physical check of the jewellery at the branch.

The LTV (loan-to-value) ratio is the share of the gold's value that can be given as a loan. The ceiling is 85% for amounts up to Rs.2.5 lakh under the instructions. Above Rs.2.5 lakh but not exceeding Rs.5 lakh, the ceiling is 80%, while it is 75% above Rs.5 lakh.

Gold will be priced based on the lesser of its price last trading day closing or the 30-day average price from either IBJA or a SEBI-recognized exchange. This price is adjusted for purity, and only the net gold content is counted.

Application Process

  1. The applicant approaches a regulated lender, at a branch or online where offered, with the KYC documents.
  2. Weighing and testing of the jewellery is done before the client in the presence of the applicant, and a valuation report is provided.
  3. If the amount requires, the salaries will be checked to determine their ability to repay the loan.
  4. The sanction letter is issued along with the key facts statement that details the terms of the loan amount and tenure.
  5. The agreement is signed, and disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete.

Once the loan is repaid in full, the pledged gold is to be handed back within seven working days under the directions. Where the lender is responsible for a longer delay, ₹5,000 is payable for each day.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

IIFL Finance may offer gold loans where the product is available. Whether a loan is given rests on the applicant's eligibility, the assessment of the gold and the regulations in force at the time. It may suit salaried applicants who need funds between two pay cycles. Rates and fees can differ from one lender or product to another, owing to funding and risk factors.

In line with the regulations and lender policy, the loan amount can be put to use for legitimate personal or business needs, for example:

  • School fees that fall due before the salary credit
  • Hospital bills for a family member
  • Relocation costs after a job transfer
  • Expenses of a sibling's wedding

The jewellery is pledged and not sold, so ownership remains with the borrower. It is released once the loan has been repaid as per the agreed terms.

Conclusion

Salaried applicants generally begin with the same KYC papers as everyone else, along with the jewellery. The gold loan documents for salaried applicants may grow to include salary slips or bank statements once total gold and silver loans cross ₹2.5 lakh. At or below that level, the directions do not require a detailed assessment, though lenders may ask under their own policy. PAN is collected separately and does not take the place of an officially valid document. A gold loan can make funds available against eligible collateral while the borrower keeps ownership of the pledged gold. Valuation, disclosures and the handling of the gold are carried out as per the policies and regulations that apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

What documents does a salaried applicant prepare for a gold loan?

Ans.

The gold loan documents for salaried applicants tend to include identity proof, address proof, PAN details and a photograph. Salary records may be added depending on the loan amount, and the jewellery itself is checked at the branch.

Q2.

Are salary slips always unnecessary when gold is pledged?

Ans.

No. Salary slips may be asked for where a repayment-capacity assessment applies, which the directions require once total gold and silver loans cross ₹2.5 lakh. At or below that level, the lender's own policy decides what is needed.

Q3.

Can the lender ask for a bank statement?

Ans.

Yes, a bank statement may be requested, either for account verification or for the credit assessment. The period and purpose are generally stated in the lender's checklist.

Q4.

Are salaried and self-employed applicants assessed identically?

Ans.

Not entirely. The KYC and gold checks are the same, but salaried applicants may show salary records while self-employed applicants may show business records.

Q5.

Does a gold-loan application mean no credit-bureau check will occur?

Ans.

No, because the lender can verify the credit report after the applicant gives permission. Having pledged gold cannot preclude that from happening, and the permission statement would usually be included in the application form.

Q6.

What happens if my documents do not match the application?

Ans.

Mismatches in name, date of birth or address are generally corrected before the agreement is signed. The lender has its own correction process for this, and the corrected details are recorded on the file.
