Many borrowers assume that a gold loan does not touch the credit record, as the lender already holds the jewellery as security. This view tends to change when a long overdue account is marked NPA. Questions about the gold loan NPA impact on credit score then begin.

A gold loan is a secured loan in which gold jewellery is pledged with a regulated lender. This blog explains how an overdue gold loan becomes an NPA and how credit bureaus record it. It also covers why an auction does not remove the entry.

From Overdue to NPA

NPA (non-performing asset) is a term that applies to a loan once the payments have become overdue for an excessive period. As per RBI’s guidelines for classification of assets, the standard measure is the amount of the overdue for more than 90 days.

Prior to that stage, the loan remains overdue, and banks generally issue notices and collect the amounts due. It is immaterial that the loan is fully collateralized with gold; once it breaches the norm, it is automatically considered NPA.

Reporting to Credit Bureaus

Lenders report the status of loan accounts to credit information companies, also called credit bureaus, on a regular cycle. A gold loan is reported in the same way as any other loan, along with its repayment record.

The credit record impact of a non-performing gold loan comes from this reporting, as the overdue and NPA status appear on the borrower's report. Other lenders who review a later application may see this entry.

Reporting is a regulatory duty. The reminders, calls and notices sent before classification, on the other hand, follow each lender's own policy.

Auction, Repayment and the Credit Record

The gold loan NPA impact on credit score is separate from the auction of pledged gold, which is the way a lender recovers its dues. Selling the collateral does not erase an NPA entry that has already been reported.

Under the RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026, an auction follows notice to the borrower. Any surplus left after the dues are recovered is returned within seven working days. A shortfall, if any, may remain payable.

The answer to does a gold loan NPA affect your credit history is therefore yes. Repayment affects the standing of the account but not the account’s history. Full repayment usually results in a closed account and the profile improving slowly over the reporting period.

In the event of an erroneous entry in a report, the borrower may raise a dispute against the lender or the credit bureau. As per the RBI's guidelines for credit information, the amount of compensation paid by the company would be ₹100 per day beyond 30 days.

Documents Required for a Gold Loan

The KYC (Know Your Customer) file links the credit record to the right borrower. It contains photo identity proof such as Aadhaar or a passport, address proof where needed, a photograph and the jewellery.

A PAN is generally requested during KYC verification, though other papers may be considered in certain cases. Lenders may ask for a declaration or records on ownership of the ornaments, depending on their procedures. Further documents depend on the lender's policy, the loan amount and the assessment.

Eligibility and Valuation

Eligibility on age, residency and ownership is decided under the regulations and the lender's own policy. A loan provider may take credit history into account as per its internal norms.

For combined gold and silver loans above ₹2.5 lakh, the directions require a detailed credit assessment covering repayment capacity. Below ₹2.5 lakh, this valuation is not needed, although lenders might perform their own due diligence.

The Loan-to-Value ceiling is 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh. Gold is marked at the lower of the closing price of the previous day and the 30 days average of IBJA or any other SEBI regulated exchange. It takes into account the purity of the gold and considers only the net gold.

Application Process

  1. The applicant approaches a regulated lender, at a branch or online where available, with the KYC documents.
  2. With the applicant's consent, the lender may check the credit report as part of its review.
  3. The jewellery is weighed and tested in the applicant's presence, and a valuation certificate is issued.
  4. A written sanction or offer may be issued with the Key Facts Statement, giving the amount, tenure and repayment terms.
  5. The agreement is signed, and disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete.

When the loan is fully repaid, the gold is to be returned within seven working days under the directions. If the delay goes beyond this through the lender's fault, compensation of ₹5,000 a day is paid.

IIFL Finance Support for Gold Loan Applicants

IIFL Finance may provide a gold loan, though this depends on product availability and the borrower's eligibility. The assessment of the gold and the regulations in force are also considered. The product may suit borrowers who want to build a steady repayment record on a secured loan. Rates and charges are not uniform across products and lenders, as they reflect funding and risk factors.

The funds may be used for genuine personal or business purposes, within what the regulations and lender policy allow. Some examples are:

  • A small order of goods for a home-based business
  • Hostel and mess fees for a student
  • Follow-up care after a hospital stay
  • Repairs to an auto-rickshaw or delivery vehicle

Pledging gold for a loan is not the same as selling it. The borrower remains the owner, and the ornaments are handed back once the dues are paid as per the terms.

Conclusion

A gold loan is secured, but it is reported to credit bureaus in the same way as any other loan. The gold loan NPA impact on credit score arises when the NPA status reaches the borrower's report after a long overdue period. The dues will be collected by way of the auction, although the record is not cleared out. The repayment process is used to update the present status and any errors made in the record can be challenged using either the lender or the credit bureau. The gold loan allows for raising money against the eligible collateral without having to relinquish possession of the gold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

Can a gold-loan default affect my credit report?

Ans.

Yes. A gold loan is reported to credit bureaus, and missed payments may appear on the report. The gold loan NPA impact on credit score is seen once the account turns NPA.

Q2.

Does auctioning the gold automatically remove the credit entry?

Ans.

No, an auction recovers the dues but does not erase the reported history. Any balance left after the auction may still show on the report.

Q3.

Does paying an NPA immediately erase its history?

Ans.

No. Repayment changes the current status of the account but not its past record, and the update appears over the lender's later reporting cycles.

Q4.

How does settlement differ from full repayment in the credit record?

Ans.

A settlement for less than the full dues may be reported differently from full repayment. Future lenders may read a settled status with more caution than a closed one.

Q5.

What happens if the reported NPA or balance is wrong?

Ans.

A correction request can be raised through the lender's or the bureau's official route, along with statements and payment proofs. Correct past entries are generally not removed through a dispute.

Q6.

Which records help with a credit-report correction?

Ans.

The loan statement, payment receipts, the closure or settlement letter and the disputed report are the most useful. The complaint reference number also helps in following up the request.
