₹1,80,000 Gold Loan on Aadhaar Card Online: How the Declared Purpose Shapes the Loan

Three weeks before Diwali a general store needs stock, and the supplier wants payment before dispatch. A month later there is a wedding in the same family and a hall to book. Both needs are real, both are roughly the same size, and both can be met through a 180000 aadhaar loan, which in practice means a gold loan with Aadhaar serving as the KYC document. What the borrower says the money is for turns out not to be a formality. Under the RBI Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, implemented by regulated lenders from April 2026, a gold loan is recorded as either a consumption loan or an income-generating loan, and the two are structured differently in one respect that matters at this amount. Purpose is the thread here, followed by the 85% slab, the steps and the file.

Consumption Loan or Income-Generating Loan

The directions cover loans against gold for consumption and for income generation, farm credit included, and a lender records which one it is sanctioning. The distinction has one hard consequence. A consumption loan repaid in a single bullet at the end is capped at a 12-month tenure. An income-generating loan, working capital for a shop for instance, is structured under lender policy around the cycle it funds, because the 12-month bullet cap was written for consumption loans. A wedding loan and a stock-purchase loan of the same ₹1,80,000 may therefore carry different tenures at the same counter.

Purpose is generally declared rather than proved at this size. For loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, the RBI directions do not mandate income proof or a detailed credit assessment, though lenders may apply their own policies. A business purpose does not by itself trigger a business file. What every purpose shares is one exclusion: the directions bar a loan against gold or silver from being used to buy gold or silver in any form.

Credit history may be considered by lenders in accordance with internal policies and applicable regulatory requirements. That holds whichever purpose is recorded. Interest rates and charges may differ across products and lenders based on operational, funding and risk-management considerations. A lender's schedule may also carry separate lines for the two categories.

The Limits of Aadhaar in a Gold Loan Application

Whatever purpose is recorded, the Aadhaar card does the same narrow job. It proves identity and address under the lender's KYC procedure. Nothing more. How much a lender is willing to sanction, what tenure it offers and whether it sanctions at all are questions the card cannot answer, because they turn on the ornaments, the slab and the lender's criteria rather than on an identity document. The assessment generally considers income, existing obligations, repayment capacity, collateral value and lender-specific policies. A shopkeeper and a household with the same Aadhaar and the same gold may therefore receive different offers for different purposes at the same counter, and the role of credit history varies by lender and product type, with eligibility remaining subject to the lender's assessment criteria and applicable regulations.

Steps to Apply

  1. The borrower approaches a regulated lender with the ornaments and states the purpose, at a branch or through the lender's online channel where one is offered.
  2. Aadhaar and PAN are verified under full customer due diligence, since an OTP-based e-KYC account is generally restricted to term loans far smaller than ₹1,80,000.
  3. Weighing and purity testing are done with the borrower watching, and the certificate follows.
  4. The offer records the purpose category, the amount within the 85% slab, the rate, the tenure suited to that category, the structure and the charges.
  5. Once the agreement is executed, disbursal follows once verification and the remaining formalities are complete. Disbursal, where approved, is made in accordance with applicable regulations, lender procedures and the borrower's designated bank account details.

Documents Required for a ₹1,80,000 Gold Loan

  • Aadhaar card, for identity and address proof under the lender's KYC procedure
  • PAN card, generally required for a loan of this size in accordance with applicable KYC, tax and regulatory requirements
  • A recent passport-size photograph
  • For a business purpose, any trade or shop record the lender's policy asks for; income proof is generally not sought below ₹2.5 lakh for either category
  • The ornaments, for weighing and purity testing

Lenders may seek declarations, supporting records or other information relating to ownership of pledged ornaments where required under their internal procedures. Additional documentation requirements, if any, depend on the lender's policies, loan amount and assessment requirements.

Valuation Framework and Eligibility

The sanctioned amount is linked to the assessed value of eligible collateral and the applicable loan-to-value framework. At ₹1,80,000 the first slab applies, where loans up to ₹2.5 lakh generally remain subject to a maximum LTV of 85%, subject to applicable regulations and lender policy. The lender values the gold under the benchmark methodology prescribed under applicable regulatory requirements and lender procedures, at present the lower of the previous day's closing benchmark price and the relevant 30-day average benchmark price published by IBJA or a SEBI-regulated exchange, adjusted for purity and net weight. Actual collateral requirements vary with prevailing benchmark prices, purity assessment, deductions for non-gold components and lender valuation procedures on the date of appraisal.

Eligibility criteria, including age, residency and ownership-related requirements, are subject to applicable regulations and lender policies. Unlike a sale transaction, a loan against eligible gold collateral generally allows the borrower to retain ownership, subject to repayment and the lender's applicable terms and conditions. An unsecured personal loan of the same amount, by contrast, is sized on income and a bureau score rather than on collateral.

How IIFL Finance Processes Gold Loan Applications

IIFL Finance may process applications for a gold loan of ₹1,80,000, subject to product availability, borrower eligibility, collateral assessment, internal policies and applicable regulatory requirements. Individuals seeking information about regulated gold loans may review lender-specific eligibility criteria, documentation requirements and applicable disclosures before submitting an application.

Subject to applicable regulatory requirements and lender policies, funds obtained through a gold loan may be used for various legitimate personal or business-related purposes:

  • Festival-season stock for a general store or garment shop
  • A wedding hall, catering and related ceremony costs
  • Seed, fertiliser and labour for a sowing season
  • Hospital charges for a planned procedure

The ornaments are held in safe custody, and release follows full repayment within seven working days under the directions, with ₹5,000 per day generally owed for a delay the lender is responsible for.

Conclusion

The purpose a borrower gives for a ₹1,80,000 gold loan on Aadhaar card is recorded and shapes the tenure on offer. A consumption loan on a bullet structure ends within 12 months. An income-generating loan is built around the cycle it funds, under lender policy. Neither purpose calls for income proof below ₹2.5 lakh, neither may be used to buy gold, and both are capped at 85% of assessed value in the first slab. A gold loan may provide access to funds against eligible collateral while allowing ownership of pledged gold to be retained. Valuation procedures, disclosures, and collateral handling are carried out in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

Can I take a loan with only an Aadhaar card?

Ans.

Generally not on the card alone. Aadhaar proves identity and address; a lender needs something to lend against, and for a gold loan that is the ornaments. PAN is also generally required for a loan of this size. What stands in for the income file at ₹1,80,000 is the gold, because below ₹2.5 lakh the directions do not mandate income proof or a detailed credit assessment, so Aadhaar, PAN and the ornaments generally complete the application. A business purpose adds whatever trade record the lender's policy asks for, not an income file.

Q2.

Can I get a ₹2 lakh loan on my Aadhaar card?

Ans.

Generally, yes, through a pledge of ornaments, Aadhaar serving for KYC. ₹2 lakh stays inside the first slab, so the 85% ceiling and the absence of a mandated income check apply exactly as at ₹1,80,000. A business purpose at ₹2 lakh may be structured over a longer cycle under lender policy, while a consumption loan on a bullet basis stays within 12 months. Whichever category is recorded, the loan is barred under the directions from being used to buy gold or silver in any form.

Q3.

How much loan will I get for 18,000 salary?

Ans.

On the unsecured route, generally a small amount, since income sets the limit there. On the gold route the ₹18,000 is not the measure at ₹1,80,000. The directions do not mandate income proof below ₹2.5 lakh, though lenders may apply their own policies, and the ornaments set the ceiling. The salary still governs the repayment plan, and a business purpose may be structured around the trade cycle rather than a fixed monthly instalment. The key facts statement sets out the outgo before anything is signed.
