Can You Open a Savings Account With Just Aadhaar Card?

Table of Contents

Opening a first savings account often begins with one document question: is Aadhaar enough, or will the bank ask for something else? If the question is can you open savings account with just aadhaar card, the answer depends on the verification route. Aadhaar is an officially valid KYC document, and banks may use Aadhaar authentication, offline verification or another permitted method. However, a non-face-to-face account opened only through OTP-based Aadhaar e-KYC carries regulatory limits until fuller customer due diligence is completed. A Small Account is a separate category. This article explains these distinctions, account limits, online and branch routes, PAN-related documentation and Aadhaar alternatives.

What Does Aadhaar-Only KYC Actually Unlock?

Aadhaar may support identity and address verification, but the account status depends on how KYC is completed. RBI treats a deposit account opened through non-face-to-face OTP-based Aadhaar e-KYC as restricted until the prescribed customer due diligence is completed.

For such OTP-based accounts, aggregate balances across deposit accounts are capped at ₹1 lakh and aggregate credits at ₹2 lakh in a financial year. The account cannot continue beyond one year unless identification is completed through the prescribed full KYC route or Video-based Customer Identification Process (V-CIP).

This is different from an RBI-defined Small Account, which is available as an alternative where the usual KYC documents are not provided at opening.

Note: These limits apply to the specified RBI account category. Banks may also set product-level conditions.

A Small Account follows separate limits: aggregate credits up to ₹1 lakh in a financial year, withdrawals and transfers up to ₹10,000 a month and a balance up to ₹50,000 at any point, subject to prescribed conditions.

Note: A Small Account is not another name for an Aadhaar-only savings account.

How to Open a Savings Account With Aadhaar Card

For anyone searching how to open savings account with aadhaar card, banks generally offer a digital or branch-based route. The sequence varies by bank and KYC method.

Online Route: OTP-Based eKYC

A typical Aadhaar-enabled online journey may involve:

  1. Selecting a savings account on the bank's official website or app.
  2. Providing Aadhaar details and consent for authentication where offered.
  3. Entering the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
  4. Providing personal and tax-identification details requested by the bank.
  5. Completing V-CIP or another permitted identification process where required.

RBI requires OTPs and transaction alerts for these accounts to go to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. V-CIP may complete customer due diligence and remove the OTP-eKYC restrictions.

Branch Route: Aadhaar-Based or Document KYC

At a branch, the bank may verify Aadhaar through a permitted authentication or offline-verification method, or another officially valid document. Biometric Aadhaar e-KYC may be undertaken by authorised bank personnel where permitted.

A mobile number not linked with Aadhaar therefore mainly removes the OTP-based Aadhaar route; it does not by itself prevent account opening. Another permitted KYC method may be available, subject to the bank's account-opening process and required tax-identification documentation.

What If You Do Not Have a PAN Card?

A person without PAN may use the declaration prescribed under the applicable tax rules for transactions where PAN would otherwise be quoted. This area changed in 2026.

The Income Tax Department states that, from 1 April 2026, Form No. 97 under the Income Tax Rules, 2026 replaces the earlier Form 60 for persons without PAN entering transactions covered by Rule 159(2).

Accordingly, searches for open savings account without PAN card or a Form 60 bank account now require a date distinction. For an account opened under the 2026 framework, the bank's latest checklist and the current tax rules determine the declaration required.

Note: RBI's consolidated KYC page still contains legacy Form 60 references under the earlier tax framework. Current 2026 tax guidance identifies Form 97 as its replacement for applicable transactions.

Can You Open a Savings Account Without Aadhaar?

Yes. RBI recognises other officially valid documents for KYC. These include a passport, driving licence, proof of possession of Aadhaar number, Voter's Identity Card, NREGA job card duly signed by an officer of the State Government, and a National Population Register letter containing name and address.

This means can you open savings account with aadhaar card is not a question of Aadhaar being the only permitted document. Banks may rely on another OVD, an equivalent e-document, CKYCR records or another permitted KYC process. Digital journeys may differ because some are built around Aadhaar OTP or V-CIP, so branch verification may be more practical where Aadhaar-based online authentication is unavailable.

Conclusion

The key distinction is between the document used for KYC and the status of the account opened through a particular verification route. For can you open savings account with just aadhaar card, Aadhaar may support account opening, but a non-face-to-face account opened only through OTP-based Aadhaar e-KYC remains subject to RBI limits until prescribed customer due diligence is completed. The related question, can you open savings account with aadhaar card, therefore depends on whether the bank uses OTP e-KYC, V-CIP, offline verification or another accepted process. It has also covered Small Account limits, the 2026 PAN-declaration position and alternative OVDs, giving first-time account openers a basis for comparing routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.

Can I open a bank account with only Aadhaar card?

Ans.

Aadhaar may be used for bank KYC through permitted verification methods. If an account is opened in non-face-to-face mode using only OTP-based Aadhaar e-KYC, RBI limits apply until prescribed customer due diligence or V-CIP is completed. A Small Account is a separate category with different limits.

Q2.

Can I open an SBI account with only Aadhaar card?

Ans.

SBI states that its Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account is KYC-compliant and available to individuals with valid KYC documents. Aadhaar may be an accepted KYC document, while the exact onboarding route and any additional tax-identification requirement depend on the account and verification method in use.

Q3.

Can we open a bank account without an Aadhaar card?

Ans.

Yes. RBI recognises several OVDs besides Aadhaar, including a passport, driving licence, Voter's Identity Card, qualifying NREGA job card and NPR letter. The bank may complete KYC using a permitted verification method and request other information where applicable.

Q4.

Can we open a savings account without a PAN card?

Ans.

A prescribed declaration route exists for eligible persons without PAN. From 1 April 2026, the Income Tax Department states that Form No. 97 replaces the earlier Form 60 for transactions covered by Rule 159(2). The bank's current checklist determines the documentation needed.

Q5.

Why does SBI charge ₹590?

Ans.

SBI's current general service-charge material does not identify ₹590 as a universal savings-account fee. Some listed services carry a ₹500 charge plus GST, which may total ₹590 at an 18% GST rate. The actual reason depends on the debit narration and the specific service involved.

Q6.

Can I open a savings account without an Aadhaar card?

Ans.

Yes. Aadhaar is one KYC option rather than the only OVD under RBI's framework. A passport, driving licence, Voter's Identity Card, qualifying NREGA job card or NPR letter may be used, subject to the applicable verification and other account-opening requirements.
