A 40-year-old security guard foiled a robbery bid by a gang of five at the office he was at employed at. The company, India Infoline Finance Limited (IIFL), on Monday felicitated the braveheart, Ganpat Waghmare, whose presence of mind led to the arrest of the five dacoits.

The incident took place early on Sunday. The gang had targeted the firm to loot the cash and gold worth lakhs kept in vaults and lockers inside.

While three of the criminals tried to break open the main office door, the other two caught hold of Waghmare and hit him with an iron rod. "The watchman showed a lot of courage. He not only hit back at the two dacoits and also overpowered them. As the dacoits started to flee, Waghmare called up his employer and he, in turn, informed the police control," said deputy commissioner of police (zone 2) Sanjay Yenpure.

The DCP added that after being alerted by the police control, cops soon managed to catch all five dacoits who were trying to hide in the vicinity.

At the felicitation programme at Uran on Monday, Waghmare said he was only doing his duty: "Thank you for all this appreciation. I was only doing my duty that night when the dacoits struck."

"Waghmare, a resident of Karanja in Uran taluka, had been working with IIFL for the last two years. His quick thinking and brave act of challenging the armed dacoits, coupled with the quick response of the police personnel, helped in the arrest of the dacoits," said senior inspector of Uran police, Rajendra Galande. The nabbed dacoits were found to possess weapons like rods, hammer, screwdrivers etc.

Galande added, "The arrested accused have been booked for attempting dacoity. While two of them are fish vendors who used to regularly come to Uran to sell fish, the gang members had conducted a recce of the area and targeted the finance company office."

All the accused hail from Jharkhand and had planned the dacoity to make a quick buck. Those arrested are Shafiq Shaikh (22) from Kurla, Saja-Ul-Haq Shaikh (27) from Kalamboli village, Ahmad Hussain (20), Hashim Shaikh (20) and Azad Shaikh (22), all three from Masjid Bunder slums. The Panvel JMFC court has remanded them in police custody till November 13.
