When Ratan Tata named the world's cheapest car the Nano, which is Latin for dwarf, he was thinking of its size, not its sales. At the launch in April 2009, India's premier industrialist confidently predicted sales of 20,000 a month for the vehicle he also calls The People's Car. But the people are not buying. Tata Motors despatched just 509 cars to Indian buyers in November, rather fewer than Mercedes.
